Wild Blue

The Selvaggio Blu is perhaps the most original (and also tiring) experience that frequent visitors to the Alps can have, and at the same time a true backpacking adventure in one of the most beautiful wild corners of Italy (and beyond).

Selvaggio Blu is not a classic Alta Via in the style of the Dolomites, where the paths are all perfectly marked and there is a refuge and or refreshment point every couple of hours of walking at most. Through this trek we encounter traces of mule tracks opened by the Carbonai (charcoal burners) in the early 20th century; traces of Sardinian shepherds who, in order to look after their goats in a harsh and rocky environment overlooking the sea, found very daring passages between the crags and the woods, without the use of a rope (up to grade IV) and often with the help of specially prepared juniper trunks(iscala 'e fustes) resting on the rock to jump up from one wood to another. So, these mule tracks, traces of paths, iscala 'e fustes, climbing stretches (nowadays tamed in some places by a metal cable, the others need to be equipped at the moment with the rope) and vertiginous abseiling equipped for the first time by the creators Verin and CicalÃ˛ in the 1980s, go to define the 'path' of Selvaggio Blu.

NEW PRODUCTS

Our Selvaggio Blu proposal is for five days of trekking, and in order to stay as close to the sea as possible, we will tackle the variant opened in 2014 by Marcello Cominetti together with the Explorando Supramonte guys between Cala GoloritzÊ and Cala Mariolu, where a ledere (a very exposed path of earth mixed with gravel) and a 30-metre ferrata allow us to cross a complicated forest suspended above the coast and to overcome a steep and exposed rocky edge before returning to a comfortable charcoal pile in the Ispuligi forest.

For the Selvaggio Blu departures in 2021, we have come up with a couple of novelties. The classic version will include a night in a managed sheepfold, to add to the adventure a pleasant culinary experience and a chance to taste some typical local dishes. We will also offer a spring and autumn departure in the spirit of "comfort", again with a night in a managed sheepfold and two nights on a yacht for an above-water experience. The yacht is equipped with three cabins with two beds each, two bathrooms and a nice table for dinner and breakfast on the terrace where you can also sleep for the night on comfortable mats.

GENERAL PROGRAMME

Day one: the meeting is set for 6 p.m. at theAlbergo Santa Maria, in Santa Maria Navarrese. Before dinner, introduction to the trek, briefing and material check.

Day Two: We set off directly from the hotel to reach a beautiful half-hill path that in just under two hours takes us to Pedra Longa, a 150-metre spire above the sea, which also marks the official start of Selvaggio Blu. A possible refreshing swim at the little beach of Forrola before climbing the first zigzags that lead to Cengia Giradili. Having passed a wooden gate halfway up, we take a diversion to tackle the Scalone di Sos Oggiastros, a technical variant that takes us up to the crest of Punta Giradili via steep walls, juniper trunks and short sections equipped by the guide. Oggiastros was equipped by Battista Lai, the shepherd of Us Piggius, who is still active. We spend the first night not far away, near Monte Ginnirco.

Day three: this is the longest and most strenuous stage of our Blue Wilderness. We leave the Us Piggius sheepfold at first light to cross the challenging 'furrowed fields' (rocky, sometimes steep and exposed slopes, characterised by rock blades that require great care), then beautiful holm-oak and strawberry-tree woods up to the first technical section of Selvaggio Blu on Bacu Tenadili, where we put on the harness and use the rope and carabiners to climb a steep wall.

Fourth day: we get into the thick of the adventure. We leave our bivouac and follow a good track to Punta Salinas, where we enjoy the view par excellence of the Goloritzè spire and the stretch of coastline that will be the protagonist of the next few days. Time to visit the small sheepfold of Salinas before descending to Cala Goloritzè, a UNESCO heritage site and one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia.

Once we have overcome the difficulty of a short ferrata, we take an easy charcoal path that will lead us to the beautiful Cala Mariolu, our day's destination.

This is the shortest stage of Selvaggio Blu, with little ascent (300 metres maximum), it normally takes five hours to reach Cala Mariolu, but it should be approached very carefully and without haste. Opting for the comfort programme with yacht support, here we will use the boat for the second night.

Day five: Here too, we set off uphill directly from the beach along a steep and strenuous gravel gully (100 metres difference in altitude), where once again the rope positioned by the guide will be of great help. Here it is time for a rope abseil, the first of four planned for the fourth stage.

Day six: the grand finale. A day that starts at the water's edge, in full exposure, through improbable passages. After a brief visit to Ovile Piddi, it is time to slip into the Sa Nurca Gorge, and immediately afterwards it is time again to rely on the rope for the two vertiginous abseils that take us directly into the woods above Cala Biriala. Here, the long falsopiano path through the forest of Oronnoro and then Plummare should not make us think that it is all over. There is still the landslide of Plummare to cross, then the key section of Selvaggio Blu classico along two slabs equipped with metal chain. Another vertical abseil of exactly 30 metres, another struggle through brambles and junipers to reach the last rope abseil above Cala Sisine. Typical dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

Day Seven: Breakfast at the hotel and disbandment of the group.

EQUIPMENT

- 40-50L rucksack (I have been using an Arcteryx AFL 40 for years, it is an expensive but indestructible rucksack, waterproof for real, even after heavy use in the mountains)
- Light-medium weight sleeping bag (comfort temperature around 5-10 degrees, don't bring old sleeping bags which bulk up a lot and are cold. Personally, I can recommend SeaToSummit SPII , which is also too warm)
- Polyurethane or self-inflating mattress (if you feel like spending a little more money, I recommend the Thermarest NeoAir Xlite, it is very comfortable, extremely light and takes up minimal space in your rucksack. Otherwise, Decathlon's Forclaz is inexpensive and offers more or less the same service)
- Harness (a lightweight glacier/ski mountaineering type is sufficient), two wide-base ring karabiners, a piece of 9-9mm full-length rope.5mm long 3 metres
- Climbing helmet
- Headlamp
- Cup, plate, cutlery (if you have to buy, the Sea To Summit brand sells good silicone products perfect for camping, plastic cutlery from Decathlon is fine)
- Tried and tested hiking shoes, preferably low (not trail running shoes, they get destroyed). No need for hiking boots (slippers/sandals for the evening recommended to let your feet breathe)
- Lightweight Gore-Tex jacket
- Lightweight down jacket (like a Patagonia Down Sweater, also sleeveless)
- Cotton sweatshirt or light fleece
- 2 T-shirts possibly white or otherwise light-coloured.
- Sturdy canvas trousers and shorts
- Socks and pants (I recommend one pair of socks per day)
- Swimsuit
- Bandana like Buff
- Hat, cream and sunglasses
- Insect repellent
- Towel and toiletries (Decathlon's microfibre towel large is perfect)
- Poles not essential and only if foldable(Leki, Black Diamond and Gipron among the most common)
- External battery to charge the phone (there is always signal in the evening when we are at the beach, a 10000mAh battery is more than enough)
- Water bottles are not necessary!
