Antonio Dimai's most beautiful route "Deo"?
The 150th anniversary of the birth of a great Ampezzo mountain guide, Antonio Dimai "Deo," may be an excellent opportunity to repeat his most beautiful and significant routes opened in the late 1800s and very early 1900s in the Dolomites.Â
I have already talked about his route on the south face of Punta Grohmann recently (below you will find some more photos taken a couple of weeks ago), the one on the south face of Punta Fiames I repeated last year, but the real masterpiece of Antonio Dimai "Deo" remains the ascent on the gigantic south face of the Tofana di Rozes together with Baronesses Ilona and Rolanda Von Eotvos in August 1901.Â
An authentic journey into the heart of one of the most beautiful walls of Cortina d'Ampezzo and of all the Dolomites, a complex route of such beauty that it identifies it as one of the most beautiful routes of the entire Rozes. For me it is THE route on the South Face, certainly the technically easiest route, but here we are talking about an adventure from another time.Â
Where there were no pitons yet, you followed the weak lines of the wall (on exceptional rock in this case, and that's no small feat) and had to face a very exposed 2/3 traverse of the wall, three fantastic pitches of rope that take you up the final two chimneys and to the shoulder of the antecedent.
Go and repeat it now, I think I've tried hard to convince you.
